Louis van Gaal intends to use Marouane Fellaini as a striker this season

Louis van Gaal intends to use Marouane Fellaini in a more attacking role this season at Manchester United.

The Belgian came on for the last few minutes against Club Brugge and made an immediate impact with a powerful header that gave Man United an important two goal lead going into tomorrow’s fixture.

With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin joining United this summer, van Gaal has fantastic options in central midfield and because of that he cannot see Fellaini getting much game time in that role.

When asked where Fellaini will play this season, van Gaal said: “He can play as a no.9 and a no.10, and he can also play as a no.6 and no.8. This year he wiil play more as a no.9 and no.10 rather than 6 and 8 because there we have other players.”

Fellaini may have declared his dream position was as a defensive midfielder for United back when he joined but he is so much more effective in an attacking role.

When used correctly, Fellaini is unplayable. He wins almost every long ball sent up to him and that can give United a really different option which can be really effective.

The problem with Fellaini last year was that United ran out of ideas too quickly and resorted to playing long balls to him too often. Hopefully that won’t happen this season, although United’s recent attacking displays won’t fill fans with too much confidence at the moment.

United fans are still hoping to see a new striker signed in this transfer window but if that doesn’t happen, it sounds like we could be seeing a lot more of Fellaini in an attacking role.
