Rooney had been in for some criticism following his slow start to the season and his lack of goals.
The Man United captain has been starting as the lone striker in Louis van Gaal‘s team and has sometimes suffered from a lack of service.
Following Rooney’s hat-trick, Herrera told ManUtd.com that he is happy for his “captain” and “leader”.
“Wayne is our captain, our leader, and we are happy for him. When he scores, things are always easier but he is also a team player. He is always helping the team and not thinking only about himself,” Herrera said.
Herrera was impressive himself on Tuesday night and got on the scoresheet but the story of the night was definitely Rooney’s hat-trick. The Englishman has hit slumps in form before and has always come back to prove the critics wrong.
It remains to be seen whether it is the formation and service that Rooney is getting or his own personal form that is affecting his goals output. The more games Rooney gets and the fitter he becomes, the better for United and perhaps the hat-trick will give his season a kickstart.
