Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted that Ander Herrera’s long-term future in the side may be in the No.10 role.

Fans’ favourite Herrera has gone through a tough start to the season having often been left on the substitute’s bench by van Gaal.

However, he was handed his first start of the season in the 4-0 victory against Club Brugge earlier this week.

Although he struggled in the first half in a deeper role, Herrera flourished once he was moved up behind Wayne Rooney, grabbing an assist before scoring himself. Van Gaal revealed that he had a “theoretical scheme” that Herrera may be useful at No.10:

Van Gaal’s comments will delight supporters, who widely believe that United are much more dangerous with Herrera in the starting XI.

Adnan Januzaj is set to miss the game against Swansea City this weekend due to injury so Herrera may well be given another opportunity to impress there. The hope is that he can put in a similarly effective performance.
