Manchester United’s Juan Mata: Wayne Rooney deserved hat-trick against Club Brugge

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata was delighted to see Wayne Rooney bag a hat-trick against Club Brugge on Wednesday.

The club captain ended a run of ten games without a goal and he did so in some style, scoring three goals in 57 minutes to send Man United into the group stage of the Champions League.

Mata registered the assist for Rooney’s third goal with a sumptuous through ball and the Spaniard was happy to see his team-mate end his goal drought.

“I’m very happy for him because he was training well.” Mata said.

“He did what he knows how to do – to score goals and to play for the team, running for the team-mates and it was good that we could give him the assists.

“He was looking for a goal, he got three, and he could have scored more. I’m very happy for him. He deserves it.”

Rooney’s selflessness has been a topic of discussion following his impressive performance against Brugge. The 29-year-old had struggled in United’s opening four games of the season but Louis Van Gaal has placed his faith in his skipper.

The England captain repaid his manager’s trust and will hope he can carry his new-found form into United’s game against Swansea City on Sunday.
