Manchester United’s imminent announcement for the signing of Anthony Martial from AS Monaco has caused quite the stir in France.
There is widespread disbelief at the fee Man United are going to pay for him. While the British press have reported the deal is worth £36m, L’Equipe have today run with a front page splash once again insisting it is actually €80m instead.
“More than Zidane” is the headline which L’Equipe have decided to go with and, at that price, you can understand that some would question the value behind the deal.
However, there are so many prices being banded around by different sections of the media that it is quite difficult to define what Martial’s price really is.
From a fans’ perspective, price is largely irrelevant. United have so much money thanks to the Adidas and Chevrolet deals, not to mention the multitude of other regional sponsors plus players who have been sold already this summer, so that money should be spent on squad reinvestment.
At the time of writing, United are currently the third lowest net spending club in the Premier League so they should be doing their utmost to invest wisely on what could be a dramatic deadline day for the third year in succession.
