Monaco upped their price for new Manchester United signing Anthony Martial by £15m – report

Monaco raised their asking price for Anthony Martial by £15m due to Manchester United’s desperation for a striker, according to ESPN.

Man United signed the 19-year-old Frenchman on a four-year contract on Tuesday for a fee of £36m, making Martial the world’s most expensive teenager.

The French side were aware of the fact that, with barely any time left in the transfer window and only one recognised striker available to Louis van Gaal in Wayne Rooney, United were desperate for reinforcements up front, and thus significantly upped their valuation of Martial.

So while United have captured an immensely promising young talent in Martial, many believe that the sum paid for the youngster is far too high.

Such an astronomical sum will translate into a demand for immediate brilliance from Martial – in similar fashion to the likes of Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in their early days – which, with only 62 career appearances under his belt, is an unfair request.

Martial, a devilishly quick, energetic forward with bucketloads of potential, certainly has the makings of a top striker, but will need time to find his feet at Old Trafford.

The question is, with the scrutiny on United’s current attack already reaching seismic levels, will supporters have the patience to give Martial time?
