Martial became the most expensive teenager in world football when he joined Man United on deadline day in a deal worth at least £36m.
The Frenchman is capable of playing in a variety of attacking positions but he impressed up top for Monaco last term.
Martial would like to play in a central position but added that he is prepared to play elsewhere if it helps the team.
“He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre,” he said.
“He told me I could play in a number of positions. It’s the coach who decides but whatever position I’ll do the best I can.”
United would have done their homework before signing Martial and van Gaal will have a clear plan for how he fits in the team. However, it is important not to expect too much from him too early. Aged just 19, Martial is far from the finished product. Patience will be a key factor in his development.
