Gareth Southgate trusts Manchester United to develop James Wilson

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate has revealed he trusts Manchester United over James Wilson.

Wilson scored the only goal as England U21s beat the USA U23’s earlier this week and his manager was extremely pleased with his performance.

Making his first international U21 appearance, Wilson bagged the winner in the 70th minute with a trademark poacher’s finish inside the six-yard box.

The 19-year-old will now want to further his development as a footballer and Southgate feels that Man United is the best place for him to do that.

“Manchester United is one of the best football clubs in the world for nurturing players and what happens is for him [Wilson] and his club to decide,” Southgate said.

“He is at a club with a history of developing young players and I am sure they will make the right decision with him.

“Wilson is a work in progress and still has some filling out to do, but he has shown he can score goals.”

The youngster is yet to appear for United yet this season after seemingly playing his way into Louis Van Gaal‘s thinking last term. Wilson started a handful of games, including the home win against Liverpool, last year but is yet to make an impact this campaign.

With the arrival of Anthony Martial at United, Wilson could find himself even further away from the first-team. Despite reports that the Englishman was on his way out on loan on transfer deadline day, Wilson is still at the club and eager to fight for a place in the starting XI.
