Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has revealed exactly what went on during his entertaining exchange with Aston Villa’s Micah Richards last month.
During Man United’s 1-0 win, the pair were constantly at each other, grappling in the box and Richards felt he should have had a penalty.
Many got the impression that Darmian intended to distract the Villa captain before a corner was taken but the Italian has now spoken out about what really went on.
“With Micah, it was said I tried to distract him at the corner and I saw a video came out where they were saying I was pointing to his face to put him off.” the 25-year-old said.
“However, it was because he had a cut on his face and I was trying to tell him it was bleeding. Journos jumped on the incident a bit, but after the game, we shook hands. I certainly never called him soft if he thought that!”
United went on to win the game and Darmian has since continued his impressive start to his Old Trafford career.
The former Torino man, who has been nominated for United’s Player of the Month award for August, has been one of the standout performers for the Reds so far this season. He has played an integral part in solidifying a back four that has only shipped two goals in the league.
