Wayne Rooney excited by Anthony Martial signing

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed new signing Anthony Martial to be successful at Old Trafford.

Martial made his move from Monaco to Man United on deadline day in a deal worth a reported £36 million and Morgan Schneiderlin revealed that Rooney was not sure of the new arrival’s capabilities.

The striker is confident, however, that the 19-year-old can prove himself to be a good signing for United.

Speaking ahead of England’s game against San Marino, Rooney said: “It’s been well documented I haven’t seen that much of him to be honest, so I can’t really say too much on him.”

Martial impressed hugely last year as Monaco dumped Arsenal out of the Champions League and Rooney referenced that particular tie as his judgement of United’s newest acquisition, their sixth of the summer.

Rooney added: “I saw him last season against Arsenal where he had a fantastic game, so hopefully he’ll be a great signing for us.

“He’s got a lot of ability from what I’ve seen and I’m sure he’ll be a good player for us.”

Martial will provide competition for Rooney, given he can play anywhere across the front three with his pace and trickery. The skipper himself has had an underwhelming start to the season despite his hat-trick against Club Brugge.

It may be the wake-up call Rooney needs to start performing on a regular basis for his club, as he attempts to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record for England over the next week.

The 29-year-old will sympathise with Martial, given the similar circumstances that brought him to the club. Rooney signed for United as an 18-year-old from Everton as part of a big money deal as well and his vote of confidence will definitely help the young Frenchman as he prepares for life at Old Trafford.
