Theo Walcott: Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is a ‘winner’

Theo Walcott believes Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is a “winner” who always wants to improve.

Rooney has come under fire this season for his performances in a Man United shirt, which have been subpar aside from a hat-trick against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

However, he scored against San Marino for England last week to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s scoring record for The Three Lions.

Speaking after the game, Walcott praised Rooney for his relentless desire to win.

“What can you say? Wayne has been doing it for years. It just shows how established he is as an England international and a Manchester United player,” Walcott said.

“He is so good in that dressing room, he is a winner. In training, he always wants to win – never wants to lose. He just wants to improve and improve this team. He has that belief in this dressing room that this young talent can actually go on and do something special and I believe that too.”

Although it is easy to focus on Rooney’s performances, United as a whole have been largely devoid of ideas going forward this season. However, Rooney does need to be better if United are going to be successful. He has been trusted to score at least 20 goals by Louis van Gaal and it doesn’t look like he’ll get anywhere near that at this current moment in time.
