Manchester United’s Sergio Romero: I have ‘huge support’ from Louis van Gaal

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has insisted he has the backing of his manager Louis van Gaal.

The Argentine has started all six of Man United’s games this season since joining on a free transfer this summer but he has got off to an inconsistent start at Old Trafford.

Despite only conceding three goals thus far, Romero has shown both the best and worst sides of his game but he is thankful that van Gaal has placed his trust in him.

The 28-year-old said: “Playing for United is a dream and if God helps me this dream will never end. As I have been saying: I have to thank van Gaal for trusting me.

“Although I had not done a pre-season, I started playing for the biggest club in the world. It’s important for a goalkeeper to have this support.”

However, Romero is not resting on his laurels. After David De Gea‘s move to Real Madrid failed to materialise, the news that the Spaniard will be at United for the rest of the season will definitely put pressure on Romero, something the goalkeeper understands.

He continued: “But let me tell you, I don’t think that the goalkeeper spot in United is already mine. I do know that I have a huge support from van Gaal and his staff.

“That is because there is no rotation between goalkeepers – a goalkeeper starts or he is benched. They are the only two choices – there is not a third one. And Van Gaal has given me his trust.”

With a huge clash against Liverpool following the international break for United, it will be interesting to see who van Gaal starts in goal. De Gea, last year’s Player of the Season, may finally get his opportunity this campaign.

Romero’s performance in the 2-1 defeat to Swansea left plenty to be desired and van Gaal may not be willing to risk the new signing in goal for such a big game. De Gea performed admirably in the same fixture last season and that may be enough to convince the manager to restore his No.1.
