Xabi Alonso hails Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick as ‘perfect’ midfield pairing at Manchester United

Xabi Alonso has described Manchester United’s former midfield partnership of Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes as ‘perfect’.

The duo played together from 2006 to 2013 and won five premier-league trophies, two league-cups and one Champions League during their time together at the club.

Following Scholes’ second retirement in 2013, Carrick is now the only one out of the pair to play at the club, and Alonso has insisted that the pair were a perfect fit at Man United.

He said: “I remember him and Scholes were like a perfect machine, because Carrick was always in the right position and Scholes was moving around, doing his special things.

“I’ve always seen myself in him; he could play in the Spain national team.”

Other than Man United fans, Carrick is an example of a player who has been criminally under-rated during his time at Old Trafford. His playmaking, dictating and decision-making abilities are at times unplayable, and have been instrumental in United’s recent successes.

Following this summer, supporters will hope to see the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger work together to forge another beautiful midfield partnership, something which could be crucial if United are to compete on all fronts in the coming year.

One thing that is for sure though, it just isn’t the same without Paul Scholes.
