Louis van Gaal confirms James Wilson to join Championship club on loan

Louis van Gaal has confirmed James Wilson is set to join a Championship club on loan.

The deal will include an emergency call-back clause for Manchester United which can be activated if van Gaal wants to bring Wilson back to Old Trafford at any point.

The 19-year-old striker hasn’t featured for Man United in the Premier League so far this season with van Gaal opting to put Javier Hernandez on the bench ahead of him before the Mexican was sold to Bayer Leverkusen.

Now, Wilson will be sent out on loan in order to gain first-team experience rather than be a back-up at United.

This is a transfer deal which will certainly split opinion. On the one hand it is a good idea for Wilson to be going out and getting regular minutes under his belt but on the other, United aren’t exactly swimming in options up front this season.

Wilson’s departure will mean Wayne Rooney is the only recognised striker in the squad. Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay will no doubt play in that role across the course of the year but it is still a gamble, regardless of the clause which could see Wilson called back at any time given the amount of upheaval that would cause for the 19-year-old.

The one good thing to come out of Wilson’s loan is the fact he will be tested week-in-week-out in senior, competitive football and that’s something his development needs at this stage, so there is logic behind the deal in that sense.

Time will tell if it’s a move which backfires on van Gaal but from Wilson’s perspective, he’ll probably be happy so long as he is playing regular football.
