Martin Odegaard spoke to ‘both Manchester teams’ before joining Real Madrid

Real Madrid wonderkid Martin Odegaard has revealed that he held talks with a whole host of clubs in England before moving to the Bernabeu, including Manchester United.

The youngster was extremely sought after earlier this year after he became the youngest player to represent Norway, aged just 15.

Top clubs all over Europe wanted to secure the services of the exciting young prospect, who eventually decided to ply his trade in the Spanish capital.

However, things could have been different for the 16-year-old. After taking part in Norway U21’s 1-0 loss to England, Odegaard admitted to considering England as his next destination before he eventually signed for Madrid.

“I visited Liverpool, the two Manchester teams and they were all very nice but my choice was Real Madrid and I am very happy with that,” said Odegaard.

“Maybe (England) will happen in the future and the time will show but right now I am very happy where I am with my club and the situation there.

Odegaard has made just one appearance for Madrid’s senior team but has been a regular for the club’s second team, Real Madrid Castilla. The Norwegian alluded to Zinedine Zidane being coach of Castilla as one of the reasons he chose Madrid.

He added: “Zidane is a great coach, a great man to learn from. He was one of the best in the world and it is a privilege to work with him.”

It is a case of what might have been for Man United and the rest of Europe’s top clubs. At just 16, Odegaard is showing plenty of potential and Madrid are carefully developing the player.

United themselves have a high-profile youngster to nurture in the form of new signing Anthony Martial. The 19-year-old’s big money move from Monaco has drawn a lot of criticism but the Reds will hope he, like Odegaard, is a star for the future.
