Van Gaal: I’m delighted with De Gea’s new contract

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted he is “absolutely delighted” after David de Gea signed a new contract at the club.

De Gea signed a new four-year deal on Friday with the option to extend for a further year.

The agreement comes after the keeper’s proposed move to Real Madrid on the last day of the Spanish transfer window fell through due to late paperwork.

Van Gaal revealed that he wants De Gea to be a part of Man United’s team “for many years to come”.

“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come,” van Gaal said.

“David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons. He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him.”

It’s safe to say that United fans couldn’t have possibly imagined the De Gea situation panning out like it did earlier in the summer.

Regardless, United have not only kept De Gea but managed to convince him to sign a new deal. Whether or not Madrid go back in for him next year remains to be seen but for now the news represents a huge boost for United. De Gea will now be looking to start against Liverpool on Saturday.
