Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney congratulated his team on a ‘great’ 3-1 win against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The striker was left out of the squad after picking up an injury in training this week but reserved special praise for Anthony Martial, who scored a brilliant solo goal on his debut.
Rooney, according to reports, sustained a hamstring injury the day before the game, keeping him out of Liverpool’s trip and the visit to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday. However, Louis van Gaal downplayed concerns over the skipper, indicating that the injury is not too serious.
The ex-Everton man admitted to not knowing much about Martial when the 19-year-old was signed by Man United but he is sure to take a special interest in the Frenchman’s progress given the electrifying start to his Old Trafford career.
Great win for us today. Delighted for @AnthonyMartial on his 1st goal. Hopefully 1st of many for us

Rooney, 29, is struggling for goals himself in the Premier League, failing to net in any of United’s first four games this season.
After finding the net on a couple of occasions while in international duty for England, the striker will be hoping he can get back to full fitness as soon as possible and get back amongst the goals for his club.
