Anthony Martial set to start for Manchester United against PSV in Champions League clash

Anthony Martial is set to be given his first start by Louis van Gaal in Manchester United’s game against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

The Mirror reports that Martial will be assessed on Monday before a decision is made but with Wayne Rooney out injured, everything points towards Martial stepping in.

After his dream goalscoring debut against Liverpool, Martial will be overflowing with confidence but even if Rooney wasn’t injured, there’d be a strong argument for the French youngster to start on Tuesday at PSV.

Van Gaal has long been an advocate of playing his strongest XI rather than simply his best XI and in that sense, Martial is first choice up front.

Prior to his stunning cameo at Old Trafford, United had lacked penetration in attack. He showed more desire to attack defenders in that short space of time than any other player has in the few games prior to it.

There’s obviously a desire to protect Martial and managing expectations but the fact of the matter is that United are in need of a goalscorer right now, so it would be very surprising to see van Gaal ignore his best option in Martial.

Something funny to note about this article from the The Mirror is that it is written by David McDonnell, the same David McDonnell whose back-page splash of ‘What a waste of money’ only ten days prior grabbed the headlines. How did that one work out for you David?
