Shaw started the game at left-back, as he has all season, but with just over a quarter of an hour played, the Englishman was on the wrong end of a shocking challenge from PSV’s Hector Moreno.
The club have since confirmed that Shaw suffered a double fracture of his right leg. It was the sort of injury that affects everyone on the pitch and the 20-year-old was eventually stretchered off the field.
Man United fans and pundits expressed their devastation after the horrible injury:
Was saying at half-time on Saturday just how important Shaw is for us. Does so much great stuff going forward as well as going back. Gutted.

Look on LVG face says it all. Bad injury for Shaw. Such a horrific sight, a player being carried away on a stretcher, clutching oxygen mask.

Dammit. It's so unfair. Shaw's easily been our best and most consistent player yet. The improvement was there. Devastated for him.

More gutted for Luke Shaw than I am for United. Our player of the season so far, a faultless attitude. Utterly devastated for him.

Shaw has started the season extremely well. He has been, arguably, one of United’s most consistent performers thus far and has put in some tremendous performances. It is so unfortunate for such a young player to suffer such a bad injury and United fans will be hoping for the best.
The former Southampton man worked immensely hard on his fitness during pre-season and his graft seemed to be paying off, given his displays. He has helped push United further up the field on the left hand side all season and has been defensively resolute. United supporters will be wishing Shaw the best.
