Gary Neville believes Anthony Martial has bought time at Manchester United with Liverpool goal

Gary Neville feels Anthony Martial has ‘bought time’ at Manchester United following his goal against Liverpool on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was signed for a hefty fee of £36 million on deadline-day in a crazy week which also saw the youngster make his international debut for France too.

The forward, who has been likened to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, was quick to impress on his debut for Man United, and scored an impressive solo goal which ensured United left Old Trafford with all-three points.

Neville has claimed that such a stunning goal will have bought Martial some time at United, which he feels is vital for a young players development.

He said: “It’s a huge moment for him, make no mistake about that. Manchester United fans – I’ve not heard them cheer as loud as that, there was a huge relief around the stadium.

“Over the next couple of months, Manchester United fans will be thinking of nothing more than Anthony Martial‘s goal against Liverpool, and they’ll give him some time.

“Even if he misses one next week in the Champions League or against Southampton, he’ll still have that feeling that he’s scored a massive goal.

“He’s taken his opportunity, and it buys him some time which I think for a young player is so important.”

Having been promoted from the famous ‘Class of ’92’, Neville can speak with some authority on the subject of player development, and he is again correct here. By scoring such a wonderful goal against rivals as big as Liverpool, Martial will have secured his place in United folklore for some time.

Although it is inevitable that supporters hopes will have been heightened by such a goal, Martial must ensure that he stays grounded, and focused on achieving the huge potential everybody knows he possesses.
