Manchester United’s Ander Herrera disappointed with loss against PSV Eindhoven

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has expressed his disappointment after his side lost 2-1 away to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Herrera started the game alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in a holding midfield role and struggled to get involved throughout. After a brilliant performance against Liverpool at the weekend, the Spaniard was unable to continue his good form against the Dutch champions.

The 26-year-old also gave his wishes to teammate Luke Shaw, who suffered a horrific injury with just over 15 minutes of the match played. Shaw sustained a double fracture in his right leg and is expected to miss, at least, the vast majority of this season.

Herrera will want to bounce back, having failed to make any real impression against PSV. He has been a bright spark for Man United at times this season but the deep-lying midfield role does not seem to be suiting him.

After starting in the same position away to Club Brugge in United’s Champions League qualifier, Herrera struggled through the first half before eventually being shifted to No.10. He has thrived in a more attacking role, which makes Louis van Gaal‘s decision to play him as a holding midfielder even more baffling.

With Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin both on the bench many United fans were left wondering as to why it was Herrera who got the spot in midfield. The midfielder will now hope to stake a claim for that position when United travel to Southampton on Sunday.
