Luke Shaw suffered an awful injury as Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The result was a disappointing one but the youngster’s double fracture made it almost irrelevant.

Shaw was on the wrong end of a shocking tackle from Hector Moreno early on in the clash and he received treatment from a number of medics before leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Shaw, who had worked so hard over the summer to prepare himself for the campaign. Here are a selection of images from the game:

United were certainly affected by Shaw’s injury but they generally performed well over the course of the match.

Unfortunately, sloppy defending led to both of PSV’s goals and United just couldn’t find an equaliser. Van Gaal will need to dust down his players ahead of a return to the Premier League against Southampton this weekend.
