UEFA have named PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno as the Man of the Match following the clash against Manchester United despite the fact he seriously injured Luke Shaw early in the game.

Moreno’s challenge on Shaw left the youngster with a double fracture of his right leg.

Shaw underwent an operation in Eindhoven hours after the game to repair the damage but he is expected to be out of action for at least six months.

Moreno has since apologised for the incident but he insisted that he didn’t think it was a foul.

UEFA’s official match report read: ”Moreno was a rock at the back for PSV, stifling the danger from [Anthony] Martial and also using the ball intelligently whenever winning possession. His prowess in the air was what brought his side back into the game when it seemed to be slipping from their grasp.

“Signing the former AZ Alkmaar defender from Espanyol was a smart piece of summer business by [Philip] Cocu.”

The fact that Moreno escaped any punishment in the game was scandalous, and United fans have been dismayed further after UEFA said they will take no further action. However, punishing Moreno would not change anything with regards to Shaw. He faces a long spell of recovery and he will need the support of everyone at United if he is to return to full fitness.
