Manchester United’s potential XI vs Southampton – Marcos Rojo at left-back for injured Luke Shaw

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United’s defensive record has been impressive so far this term but Luke Shaw’s horror injury will force Louis van Gaal to shake up his back line.

Daley Blind covered at left-back against PSV Eindhoven following Shaw’s double leg break earlier this week but he looked far from comfortable in the role.

Indeed, it was a bizarre decision from van Gaal to move Shaw’s replacement, Marcos Rojo, into a central position rather than sticking with Blind, particularly after the latter’s fine start to the campaign.

Van Gaal may be persuaded to start Rojo at left-back against Southampton as the defence has looked far more resolute with Blind and Chris Smalling partnering each other in the middle.

Elsewhere, Morgan Schneiderlin will be hoping for a recall against his former club. United will need to keep possession at St Mary’s and there is no player better suited to that than the Frenchman.

Juan Mata may find himself back on the right hand side as he was poor against PSV in the No.10 role. Finally, Anthony Martial will be hoping to continue up top. Wayne Rooney may well recover from injury for the clash but Martial has made a superb start to life at United.
