Subs: Romero, McNair, Valencia, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Young, Fellaini

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has handed Anthony Martial his second consecutive start up top for the game against Southampton this afternoon.

Martial will play in front of Wayne Rooney, who returns from injury to play in the No.10 role.

Rooney has been criticised for his performances as striker this term and his long-term future under van Gaal may well be in the hole.

Elsewhere, Daley Blind starts at left-back in place of the injured Luke Shaw. Blind’s inclusion on the left means Marcos Rojo will line-up at the heart of defence alongside Chris Smalling.

In midfield, there is no room for Bastian Schweinsteiger, who is getting a well earned rest. Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin start instead. It is a strong team and it will be exciting to see if Martial and Rooney can strike up a partnership at St Mary’s.
