Southampton defender Jose Fonte has described Manchester United keeper David de Gea as one of the “best in the world” following his superb save in the clash between the two sides on Sunday.

Graziano Pelle had put Southampton in front early on at St Mary’s before a brace from Anthony Martial gave Man United the advantage.

With the score at 2-1, De Gea somehow managed to claw Fonte’s header away from the goal line when it looked for all the world like it was sailing in.

Juan Mata eventually won the game for United, although Pelle did get another goal for the Saints in the latter stages of the match.

“It was a great save from David De Gea, I thought it was in. He showed why he is considered one of the best in the world,” Fonte said.

De Gea was fantastic against Southampton and his contribution was pivotal in securing the 3-2 victory. There have been some doubts over whether or not he is fully focused following his failed transfer to Real Madrid but he answered any critics on Sunday in resounding style.
