Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal pours cold water over talk surrounding Premier League title challenge

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that a Premier League title challenge may be too much for his side this season but refused to rule out one completely.

Man United showed some superb mental resolve during the 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday.

Van Gaal’s side came from behind to win all three points at St Mary’s and it is the sort of result that title winning campaigns are built on.

However, van Gaal stopped short of suggesting United can go all the way but insisted they will “grab” any opportunity to do so if it comes along.

“We shall always strive for it but you can’t expect a team in transition already to win a title. But when we are close, we shall grab it,” he said.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been struggling this term and Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the campaign against West Ham United this weekend.

A title challenge is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility for United but they will need to be far more consistent in their performances if they are to finish top. If they manage to string an extended run of victories together, talk surrounding the title will inevitably grow.
