Louis van Gaal warns Manchester United’s Anthony Martial to stay grounded

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has praised Anthony Martial following his brace in the 3-2 win against Southampton on Sunday but warned that the Frenchman must keep his “feet on the ground”.

Martial was superb at St Mary’s, scoring a memorable brace in his first start in the Premier League.

Coupled with his debut goal against Liverpool earlier this month, expectations have skyrocketed for the 19-year-old.

However, van Gaal insisted fans shouldn’t get too carried away with his performances.

Anthony Martial is already special because we paid a lot of money for him. A lot of people are thinking he is a great star but he is a boy of 19,” van Gaal said.

“In three matches he has shown a lot. I am very happy with him but we and he have to keep our feet on the ground.”

Martial has certainly made a stellar start to life at United but van Gaal is right in saying that patience will be key with him. The good displays will not last forever and there will inevitably be a time when things are not going the striker’s way. It is important that supporters show patience with and back him when it does come along.
