Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the contents of a letter he sent to Eric Cantona in his new book, Leading.

The letter was sent to the Frenchman after he decided to retire from football at the end of the 1996/1997 season.

Cantona had dramatically decided to quit after five years at Man United and the letter from his manager proved that the striker went against Ferguson’s wishes.

It is an insightful piece from the Scot’s new book as it gives fans a glimpse of how the most successful manager in British history managed his players even after they left the club.

Cantona was loved by the Old Trafford faithful during his United tenure and Ferguson himself seemed to take a particular liking to his star player.

After claiming that the forward was one of just four world-class players he managed at United, it is clear how highly the former manager rated Cantona. King Eric’s name is still sung by United fans everywhere and he won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
