Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night had plenty of positives for supporters but Bastian Schweinsteiger provided perhaps the best moment of all.

Wayne Rooney, substituted late on, gave the captain’s armband to Schweinsteiger but the German instead chose to pass the honour on to David de Gea.

De Gea had a turbulent summer having failed to secure a transfer to Real Madrid and Schweinsteiger giving him the armband showed just how much of a leader he is.

Schweinsteiger clearly realised that De Gea staying at Old Trafford is huge for the club and he decided to lift the keeper’s iconic status with supporters even more with the symbolic gesture.

Schweinsteiger’s influence on and off the pitch since his summer move from Bayern Munich cannot be understated.

The midfielder once again put in a stellar performance against Ipswich, regularly finding his teammates with a wide range of passing. United simply are a better side with him in it. Supporters will be hoping for more of the same when Sunderland travel to Old Trafford on Saturday.
