Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has congratulated Andreas Pereira for his “great” goal in the 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

Pereira, who was making his first competitive start for Man United, curled in a sublime free-kick at Old Trafford.

Rooney and substitute Anthony Martial also got on the scoresheet in what was a night full of positives for Louis van Gaal’s side.

Pereira received a glowing endorsement from Rooney following the game:

Rooney has taken his fair share of criticism following some subpar performances this campaign and it was good to see him get a goal under his belt.

It was beautifully taken, too. The Englishman plucked the ball out of the air, took a couple of touches and fired into the net. Lovely stuff.

As for Pereira, the evening really couldn’t have gone any better for him. Whether he features against Sunderland this weekend remains to be seen, but the Brazilian certainly thrust himself firmly into the forefront of Louis van Gaal’s thinking with his superb display against Ipswich.
