Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dismissed claims that his side are ahead of schedule.
Man United have started the season strongly and are only two points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Van Gaal’s side will have the opportunity to go top on Saturday should their city rivals drop points against Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day.
Despite the good start, van Gaal is not getting carried away but is still satisfied with the way the campaign has gone so far.
Speaking ahead of Sunderland’s visit to Old Trafford, the manager said: “No, we are not ahead of schedule.
“I think that in every league that two points average is a high average, so we maybe we are one point ahead of that schedule and that’s a good average.”
United have got through their first six games only dropping four points, a vast improvement from last year. However, with a tough run of fixtures to come, the players and management will be trying to stay focused.
Van Gaal’s men have a huge opportunity to keep the pressure on City when they play Sunderland on Saturday. The Black Cats are yet to win a game this season and were convincingly knocked out of the Capital One Cup by City on Tuesday.
It could be exactly the game United need to keep their good run of form going, following wins in the league against both Liverpool and Southampton. With the goals finally starting to flow and the performances improving by the week, United could already find themselves in what could prove to be a fascinating title race.
