Manchester United’s Memphis Depay finally scores first league goal

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United midfielder Memphis Depay scored his first Premier League goal as Louis van Gaal’s side cruised past Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman opened the scoring just before half time after neat work by Daley Blind and Juan Mata.

He has struggled in the league since signing from PSV Eindhoven, reserving his better performances for Europe, but his strike may be the spark he needs to push on.

Back in August, Memphis set himself a target to score his first league goal. Supporters will be delighted that he has finally achieved his aim:

Louis van Gaal claimed after the match that he is not concerned by who scores United’s goals but the manager is sure to have breathed a sigh of relief when Memphis tapped in at the far post. It will be a huge weight off his shoulders for the rest of the campaign and could help him loosen up and play with more freedom.

However, the 21-year-old will first turn his focus back to the Champions League, with Wolfsburg visiting Old Trafford on Wednesday. Despite scoring against PSV last time out, Memphis found himself on the losing side and will want to help United get their first win in the group stages this season.
