Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has expressed his delight at being top of the Premier League following the 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.

Schweinsteiger started the game on the substitute’s bench but came on to replace Michael Carrick in the second half. The German captain did what he does best when he finally got onto the pitch, putting on a brief masterclass in midfield.

The 31-year-old straight away controlled the tempo of the game and, with Morgan Schneiderlin alongside him, managed to get a good grip on proceedings for United.

After the introduction of Schweinsteiger, United began to play with more freedom and fluidity, creating a whole host of chances.

With key games against Wolfsburg and Arsenal coming up in the space of eight days, Schweinsteiger could have a crucial role to play. He has impressed in almost every game he has played for United thus far since signing from Bayern Munich this summer.

The World Cup winner will want the opportunity to continue his good run against a team from his home country, when Wolfsburg visit Old Trafford. Schweinsteiger thanked the fans for their support in the Sunderland game and will aim to please them once more with a win in Europe this week.
