Manchester United’s Potential XI vs Wolfsburg: Marcos Rojo returns

by Sam Peoples

Matteo Darmian put in a good shift at left-back against Sunderland at the weekend but his best position is undoubtedly at right-back.

Could Wednesday night see the return of Marcos Rojo to the left-back spot?

On paper, Rojo is the most logical long-term choice to replace Luke Shaw this season. The Argentinian plays there for his country and using him in that role would allow Daley Blind to keep his position in the heart of defence alongside Chris Smalling, a partnership which has arguably been the most important one for United this season.

Ashley Young will play there if Louis van Gaal asks him to and he’s the best alternative to Rojo but could Darmian potentially switch his role now, allowing Antonio Valencia to take over at right-back?

In attack, everything right now revolves around Anthony Martial and it would be a big surprise to see him dropped because he doesn’t at all look like he needs a rest.
