Chris Smalling praises Anthony Martial’s direct and dangerous dribbling at Manchester United

Chris Smalling believes the risk taking nature of Anthony Martial‘s style of play has brought something to Manchester United’s attack which it needed.

Prior to Martial’s introduction against Liverpool, Man United were lacklustre going forward this season and on more than one occasion Louis van Gaal‘s side were stagnant in the final third.

However, with 12 goals in the last four games, that stagnation has been turned on its head and Martial has scored four of them.

Heading into a n important tie against Wolfsburg, Martial is United’s main goal threat and Smalling has praised the Frenchman for his great start at the club.

Speaking about Martial, Smalling said: “If you could ask for a moment to announce yourself on the world stage, it would be in a massive game like Liverpool at home.

“It was a great moment and a lot of people took notice of how well he dribbled at players, how direct he was and how he took his goal.

“That’s something we’ve needed this season. He continued his good form by scoring twice at Southampton and again against Ipswich, so he’s enjoyed a great start to his United career.

“In that snippet against Liverpool, you get a real idea of how he is. He is one who is very direct, he is willing to take on players and he is willing to take on that risk. I think, in the final third, it is an area where you can take that risk because you can’t take it at the back. He looks a very sharp player.”

Smalling is spot on in his analysis of Martial. There was nobody who had the confidence and ability to run at defenders with pace like Martial does and he has brought a new dynamic to United’s attacking, once which has worked very well in the last four games.

Two tough games against Wolfsburg and Arsenal are coming up but if Martial has the composure to score the game clinching goal against Liverpool just minutes into his debut, then he won’t be overawed by any of the big occasions in United’s calendar.
