Manchester United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger warns of Wolfsburg threat ahead of Champions League clash

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is wary of the threat posed by his side’s next opponents, Wolfsburg.

The German side will visit Old Trafford on Wednesday for Man United’s second Champions League game of the season and Louis van Gaal’s side will be hoping to get their first win on the board.

They will have their work cut out, however, with Wolfsburg a formidable threat. They finished second in the Bundesliga last season behind Bayern Munich and will be confident coming into their game with United.

Schweinsteiger has played against Wolfsburg on countless occasions during his time in Munich and knows the side very well. He warned his teammates just how good their opponents can be ahead of the crucial clash.

The 31-year-old said: “They are really good, especially in the last three or four years when they have made big improvements.

“Of course they have Volkswagen behind them, in the background, but they have a good team and a good coach.”

Wolfsburg are without a win in their last two games, drawing against HSV after a shock 5-1 defeat away to Bayern. However, Schweinsteiger is not underestimating the DFB Pokal runners-up.

“They have just lost against Bayern Munich 5-1 but, if you saw the whole game, then it could have also been a little bit different. They are really strong and I would say in Germany that they are in the top three with Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.”

United go into the game knowing only a win will suffice. Having lost their opening game in Europe to PSV Eindhoven, the visit of Wolfsburg is crucial. The Germans beat CSKA Moscow in their opener, putting them three points ahead of the home side going into the game.

With Michael Carrick out injured and Ander Herrera a doubt for United, Schweinsteiger would be expected to start against his old rivals. The German captain will hope to impress and help his side to their first three points in Europe this season.
