Manchester United’s Chris Smalling: Anthony Martial ‘looks a very sharp player’

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been impressed by the early form of new signing Anthony Martial.

Martial made his Man United debut less than three weeks ago, bursting onto the scene with a stunning solo goal against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman has made a great start to his career in the Premier League and United fans and players alike have been delighted with his displays.

Smalling has loved watching Martial play and when asked about his new teammate, the Englishman said: “If you could ask for a moment to announce yourself on the world stage, it would be in a massive game like Liverpool at home.

“It was a great moment and a lot of people took notice of how well he dribbled at players, how direct he was and how he took his goal.”

United’s attack had looked tepid in games before Martial’s arrival. Louis van Gaal’s side were struggling to score goals and were finding great difficulty in breaking teams down. Smalling appreciates that Martial has brought something to them team that had been missing.

He added: “That’s something we’ve needed this season. He continued his good form by scoring twice at Southampton and again against Ipswich, so he’s enjoyed a great start to his United career.

“In that snippet against Liverpool, you get a real idea of how he is. He is one who is very direct, he is willing to take on players and he is willing to take on that risk. I think, in the final third, it is an area where you can take that risk because you can’t take it at the back. He looks a very sharp player.”

Smalling himself has had a brilliant start to the season. His performances at centre-back have been solid and the United defence has looked resolute. The 25-year-old and Daley Blind have struck up a good understanding at the back and have aided United’s rise to the top of the Premier League table.

Smalling and Martial will both need to turn their attention to Europe, as Wolfsburg visit Old Trafford. The latter will be looking for his first Champions League goal for United in what is a crucial game.
