Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian enjoys solid display against Wolfsburg

Matteo Darmian excelled at left-back in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Wednesday night.

The Italian, a right-back by trade, continued to show his worth in a Man United shirt after a commanding, assured display against the German side.

A quick look at the stats tells you all you need to know about his performance: 90% passing, 6 chances created, 4 crosses, 100% aerial duels, 43% tackles completed, 2 interceptions, 6 clearances.

It’s a set of statistics that exemplifies the defensive solidity provided by Darmian as well as the attacking threat he posed throughout the contest.

Following injuries to Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo in recent weeks, Louis van Gaal has been forced to rely on the 25-year-old to fill the left-back slot.

Given Darmian’s imperious start to life at Old Trafford, his smooth transition into life at left-back comes as no surprise, but will still be a relief to United fans, who will be increasingly concerned at the sudden lack of options in that area. The visiting side posed a threat throughout most of the contest, with Julian Draxler their focal point in attack; needless to say, Darmian dealt with the talented German with relative ease.

Following several years of wing-back issues at Old Trafford, United fans will be delighted about Darmian’s contributions during the early stages of his career in England. The Italian has now demonstrated his excellence at left-back and right-back, which bodes well for the future.
