Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-1 Wolfsburg

by Sid Choudhary

David De Gea 7 Did well when called upon and was always an option, importantly, for any defenders in trouble

Antonio Valencia 4 Played the forward onside for Wolfsburg’s goal and struggled to pick a pass throughout the first half

Chris Smalling 8 Took his goal extremely well and remained calm under huge pressure from the Wolfsburg forward line

Daley Blind 6 Got caught out wide for the opposition goal and couldn’t quite affect the game in a positive sense as he likes to

Matteo Darmian 7 Grew into the game massively in the second half with some brilliant tackles and interceptions

Bastian Schweinsteiger 8 Bossed the midfield with his passing range, while his aggression helped United win the ball back on countless occasions

Morgan Schneiderlin 6 Started brightly but wore off in the second half as the game got more stretched and he started to give the ball away

Juan Mata 9 Took the penalty well to equalise but his assist for Smalling was incredible. A world-class performance

Wayne Rooney 5 Should have equalised after good work from Martial on the right and really struggled to impose himself in the final third

Memphis Depay 6 Had a great chance to draw level from a header but couldn’t get the direction on another frustrating night for the Dutchman

Anthony Martial 8 Caused all sorts of problems for the defence all evening with his runs in behind and brilliant hold up play

Ashley Young 7 Provided instant impetus at right-back and was a huge improvement compared to Valencia

Andreas Pereira 6 Came into the game at a difficult time and couldn’t quite get accustomed to the rhythm of the match

Phil Jones 7 Put himself about after coming on, making some crucial interceptions and tackles
