Jamie Redknapp has compared Manchester United striker Anthony Martial to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
Martial signed for Man United on transfer deadline day and has put in some eye catching displays, scoring four goals in his first four games.
Despite not being able to get on the scoresheet in United’s last two fixtures, the 19-year-old has been one of the team’s best performers. He has always provided an option, either running in behind the defence or coming short to take the ball to feet.
Redknapp believes the only player to compare to Martial at his age is Messi.
“I played against Wayne Rooney when he made his debut but this boy has so much intelligence. He knows when to pass, when to cross it, when to dribble and when to shoot. He goes past people like they’re not there.”
It is a huge claim to put Martial in the same league as Messi but the early signs are encouraging for United. His displays have started to show that Louis van Gaal was right to spend such an astronomical fee on him.
Redknapp added: “Everything he does, there is a reason behind it. It’s like he’s been here before – certain players have this, you can’t put your finger on what it is, but it’s just a quality. I love watching him play. He’s going to be a superstar.”
Martial will want to keep his good run going when United make the trip to face Arsenal in the Premier League. The 19-year-old has helped his side to the top of the table, most notably with a brace against Southampton, and they will want to remain at the summit.
