Wenger: Monaco told me Martial wasn’t for sale

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he was under the impression that new Manchester United striker Anthony Martial was not for sale.

The young Frenchman has been a revelation for Man United since signing on transfer deadline day from Monaco and is proving to be a crucial part of the Reds squad. Arsenal were linked with the youngster but Wenger decided not to make a move.

The manager was ‘surprised’ that Monaco their young prodigy to join United and it is the Reds who are benefitting from the French club’s decision. Martial has had a great start to life at United and Wenger is probably regretting not going after the 19-year-old.

Ahead of United’s trip to play Arsenal, Wenger said: “I was surprised they sold him,”

“The amount of money was massive. I believe that you could think that, if you are Monaco, you could have sold him as well next season.

“So I thought they would not sell him this year because they sold many other players. I thought they would maintain their word. He was not sellable. He was not on the list. He was one of the players Monaco did not want to sell, so we never made an approach for him.”

Wenger also admitted that he was in fact looking to bring Martial to North London. Arsenal and many other clubs did not think Martial was for sale this summer but United were the only ones to make a deal worthy enough.

Wenger added: “Only an acceptable amount of money after could do it. We always liked him, even when he was in Lyon.”

Arsenal will have the opportunity to witness first hand what they are missing out on when Martial make the trip to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Since signing for United, he has been exceptional and will be hoping to keep his place in the starting lineup and add to his already impressive goalscoring record.
