The Dutchman kept his place on the left wing but did his team no favours as the Gunners ran rampant early on. It was an awful display from Man United, who are now third in the Premier League.
Ashley Young, playing at left-back, was constantly found out and there was no cover from Memphis on his wing. Nothing seemed to come off for the 21-year-old going forward either and it is starting to seem like he is really struggling to adapt to life in England.
United fans and pundits didn’t hold back in their assessment of the youngster’s display:
Memphis and Rooney need to be benched. Passengers most games. Herrera and Young need to start

Memphis needs a few weeks out of the side to refocus

Memphis has been awful, don't get me wrong, but why is it him off for Fellaini? Who's going to play wide? Why not Rooney?

I'm always preaching patience for Memphis. But he's not in it today – can't keep the ball that long against such a defensive shape.

Would sit Memphis out for the next few weeks and play Pereira. Skill and works hard. Memphis isn’t bothered about helping Young defend #MUFC

Didn't feel the hungriness from Memphis to "earn" his place so far (because he doesn't need to).

United will have to go into the international break on the back of a heavy defeat. It was a hugely disappointing showing from the Reds, who conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes and were never able to get themselves back into the contest.
Memphis, in particular, didn’t seem to get anything right at both ends of the pitch. He struggled to get past Hector Bellerin in the Arsenal defence, while his failure to track runners resulted in a constant overflow on United’s left wing. The winger will want to regroup over the international break and come back stronger when United visit Everton in just under a fortnights’ time.
