Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick ‘bitterly disappointed’ with defeat against Arsenal

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has admitted he was “bitterly disappointed” following his side’s 3-0 defeat against Arsenal on Sunday.

Man United were blown away by a scintillating performance from the Gunners, who were three up inside 20 minutes against a Man United side that were Premier League leaders at the start of the weekend.

Carrick started in midfield alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger and the pair were overrun throughout. Arsenal’s high pressure on the two in the United midfield meant neither was able to get on the ball and dictate the tempo of the game.

Instead, the Gunners continuously hit United on the break, bypassing the midfield.

The Englishman admitted to his side simply being ‘not good enough’ and given United’s performances of late, it was a shock to see this particular display. Having won four games in a row United should have been full of confidence going into the game, trying to maintain top spot.

Instead, Arsenal’s fast start caught United by surprise, scoring three goals in 20 minutes and barely giving Louis van Gaal‘s men a kick of the ball in the entirety of the first half. It was a terrible performance from United and one they will want to forget and move on from as soon as possible.

Carrick will want the chance to bounce back for his country, as England take on Estonia and Lithuania. The Three Lions have already qualified for the European Championships next year and Carrick will want to improve on his showing against Arsenal in order to fight for a starting place for his national side.
