Matteo Darmian’s display against Arsenal leaves Manchester United fans unimpressed

Matteo Darmian put in an unconvincing performance as Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Italian was deployed at right-back to try and nullify the threat of Alexis Sanchez but he struggled to keep up with the Chilean forward, who went on to score two goals in the opening 20 minutes.

Darmian was caught out of position on numerous occasions and just could never seem to get a hold of Sanchez. The 25-year-old couldn’t get forward to help out Juan Mata ahead of him and was hauled off at half time by Louis van Gaal.

Darmian had started life well at United but has struggled recently and fans made their feelings known regarding his showing:

Darmian struggled to deal with the threat of Dusan Tadic when United faced Southampton last month and his display at the Emirates was reminiscent of that poor performance. It was one of those days when nothing seemed to go right for the full-back, as Sanchez beat him time and time again on United’s right wing.

The defender will now want to draw a line under the game and forget about it while he goes on international duty with his country. It will give him the opportunity to recuperate after playing a lot of games back-to-back and he will want to return to United ready for the trip to Everton on October 17th.
