Dutch legend Johan Cruyff has criticised Louis van Gaal and the work he has done at Manchester United so far.
Man United are currently third in the Premier League following a heavy 3-0 loss against Arsenal last weekend and the manager has sometimes come under fire for performances over the past two seasons.
There has been an obvious change in ‘philosophy’ at United since van Gaal took over.
There is much more of an emphasis on possession and it almost seems as if United have slowed down under the experienced Dutchman. Cruyff has been disappointed with his compatriot’s brand of football.
”He doesn’t dominate. I like dominating football. Manchester doesn’t play like that,” Cruyff said.
However, Cruyff doesn’t think that van Gaal is too cautious in his approach. When asked about it, he added: “I don’t think so, but it’s strange that against strong teams they’ve got good results and with weak teams they’ve had difficulties. That’s a strange situation.”
“But the results I think are second. The game is first. Money is very important but always second. In England they play different, everybody has their own style. A mix of styles is always good.
“The most important part are the fans, that people going home are happy. It’s their time off and you should give them something to enjoy.”
Van Gaal’s United haven’t set the world alight so far this campaign but are just two points off Manchester City at the top of the league table. The brand of football hasn’t been anything to write home about but the results are starting to come.
Despite the heavy defeat at Arsenal, United supporters will be confident for the rest of the season. It may take time getting used to van Gaal’s style of play but with the manager’s experience, it could be the reason the team can go on to win silverware.
