Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte has played down the possibility of a move away from the Spanish club amid rumoured interest from Manchester United.
Laporte has impressed for Bilbao in recent years, most notably during their run to the Copa Del Rey final last season and their convincing victory over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.
The Frenchman has reportedly been on Man United’s radar for some time now and his name seems to pop up almost every summer.
However, Laporte has denied looking for a move as he continues to show his loyalty to Bilbao.
The 21-year-old said: “My name is mentioned in every transfer window and with a lot of teams,” Laporte said.
“I’ve renewed four times with Athletic. I’ve done what I wanted, I’ve shown confidence in the club and them in me. Let’s see if we can add more trophies.”
Laporte is a defender that many are touting for success in the future. He is still young but has already shown signs of growing into a world-class centre-half and has caught the eye of a number of top clubs around Europe.
United’s failure to buy a central defender in the summer will only add fuel to the fire where rumours regarding Laporte are concerned.
United’s defence certainly has a lack of depth and Laporte would be the ideal addition to the backline. However, given his comments, it is obvious van Gaal will have his work cut out trying to sign the centre-back.
