International Reds: De Gea keeps clean sheet, Mata given Spain captain’s armband

David de Gea enjoyed a fantastic night in Ukraine with Spain with a very accomplished performance in goal.

He made ten saves against Ukraine and that’s more than any Spanish goalkeeper has had in a single game since 2006. It was the perfect message to Vicente del Bosque – choose me as your No.1. Juan Mata came off the bench and was given the captain’s armband but he won’t be happy with being a substitute in the long-term, like De Gea he wants to start.

For England, Phil Jones started his first game of the season (for club or country) and will be happy to have come through the game without any injury. Louis van Gaal will certianly be pleased to have more options at centre-back. Jones came into the team for Chris Smalling who was given a much deserved rest by Roy Hodgson after what was been an intense season so far.

On Tuesday night, Memphis Depay and Daley Blind are in action for Netherlands in a match they must win to keep their Euro 2016 qualifying hopes alive but they also need Turkey to drop points.
