Sir Alex Ferguson: Only Michael Carrick, David de Gea and Wayne Rooney have winning mentality at Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that there are only three players within the current Manchester United squad who have a winning mentality.

Louis van Gaal‘s side are currently third in the Premier League and have, by and large, looked good this term. However, Ferguson insisted only Michael Carrick, David De Gea, and captain Wayne Rooney have a winning attitude.

Ferguson was asked if Man United had the strongest midfield in the league now that they have both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Carrick as well as Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera.

He said: “The strongest, with great experience. Carrick is a great player. Schweinsteiger has that certain something. He brings experience and confidence.

“He can say ‘I was there before, I know what it’s like to win titles’. This winning mentality, only Carrick, De Gea and Rooney have it in the team.”

Ferguson’s comments are high praise for De Gea, who has grown from a skinny youngster to one of the best keepers in the world.

Ferguson is fully aware that the squad is currently in transition and it will take time for United’s new players to prove themselves. The likes of Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay are exciting young talents but are yet to show they can do it at the very highest level.
