David Beckham: My new MLS club will be run like Manchester United

David Beckham has revealed he will model his new Major League Soccer franchise in Miami on Manchester United.

Beckham came through the Man United youth system as part of the famous Class of ’92 who then went on to the win the treble, the only English club to do so.

He of all people knows the merits of a professional club focused on youth and making the entire outfit move as one. Sir Alex Ferguson, who managed Beckham throughout the English winger’s entire career at United, ensured the club was run in the right way as everyone respected each other from players to staff to coaches.

Beckham wants to replicate that at his new MLS franchise, which he says is coming along well with a site for the stadium to be announced soon.

“We want the club to be run professionally — everything needs to be run like a club like Manchester United. You have to look at it like that,” Beckham said.

“Luckily, I’ve had a little bit of experience in that and I definitely will be a demanding owner. I want the team to be successful and the club to be successful, so I think I have to be demanding.

“I definitely won’t get involved in team decisions, though — the way players are playing and things like that. The hairdryer? Well, I’ve seen it enough times and I know how it works on the positive side of things. We’ll see.

“But I’m not going to manage or coach. I won’t get involved in any of that. I will just be the owner.”

Beckham’s desire to open a franchise was sparked a few years ago having originated when he played for LA Galaxy. In America, the former United man is the seen as the player who provided the kickstart the MLS needed, not only in America but also across the world.

Beckham will be returning to Old Trafford soon for a UNICEF charity match he is organising, where he will be sure to get a great reception having spent 12 years at United, winning everything there was to be won. Ferguson will manage Beckham’s side in the charity match, while other names will be coming out over the next weeks.
